Reception for the people of Achill Island

After the arrival on Achill our reception took place on Sunday,
6 February 2005 .
The objectives of the reception and welcome-party were:

- to get in touch with people from Achill;
- to present our ideas for the project week;
- to share experiences and to attract inhabitants of Achill Island to
participate actively in our workshops.

Dr. Laurent Borgmann opened the reception by thanking our contact
persons on Achill for the warm and friendly welcome. Then the Manager of
Achill Tourism, Stephen Corrigan, welcomed coordinators and students to Achill.
He underlined the value of the project week for the island from the cultural and economic perspective. Karsten Kneese, a student from Germany who had spent an internship at Achill Tourism in the framework of the project thanked Stephen Corrigan for the great opportunity the placement gave him not only to learn in the area of rural tourism and new media but also to become so familiar with the island and its inhabitants.

The reception was arranged as an international party. The students prepared traditional food from their home countries, e.g. “aceitunas rellenas de anchoa” from Spain or “polvoron sweets” from the Philippines . Others performed traditional dances from Sweden and Spain which invited many guests to join. Visitors could also catch a preview of the workshops, e.g. the virtual community platform, created by students in preparation for the project week.

The reception party was a big success for all involved. The project team met more than 25 people from Achill including artists, authors, photographers and representatives of institutions on Achill and made appointments for the week to come. We were very glad and grateful for the overwhelming interest in our work and looked forward to collaboration in our workshops such as “Virtual Community”, “Borrowed Identity” and “Traces of emigration”.
